INTERESTING TYPE from P'yongan Provincial Office (now in the capital of the territory). The Rev. at top has character 平 (P'yongan Provincial Office, now in Anju), at bottom 日 representing sun, and to the left number of series in this case 九 = 9. The Obv. 常 平 (from top to bottom) means Sang=always pyong=constant, and standard 寶 通 from right to left - copper coin, in this case just "money". The symbols of the Sun and the Moon, together with the Five Elements, were used for coinage. These seven symbols represented cosmic harmony and order, which were considered essential for a stable currency. This series was the King's direct response to the population's demand to use only 1-mun coins, after the failed monetary reforms of 1882–1883 and later 1888 completely undermined public trust in paper and over-denominated money. All Korean cash coins are pretty uncommon. This coin is packed in holder, which preserves it in the best way.
