Obverse: Between two lions, the coat of arms of Romania, draped and crowned, with the Latin motto below NIHIL SINE DEO (Nothing Without God), divides value, left/right 5 and L (Lei). State name at top ROMANIA, date at bottom 1881 divides Mintmarks, left B (Bucharestt) and wheat spike at right.
Reverse: Head of King Carol I facing left, (1881-1914, prince 1866-1881), designer below neck KULLRICH (Friedrich Wilhelm Kullrich). Ruler around CAROL I REGE AL ROMANIEI (King of Romania)
