Henry N. Krieger, 91, who retired from Voice of America in 1991 as chief of the French-to-Africa Branch, died Aug. 11 at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington.
He had an abdominal aortic aneurysm, said his son, Duncan Krieger.
Mr. Krieger, a Washington resident, worked at Voice of America for 27 years. His previous work included monitoring and translating broadcasts at the Foreign Broadcast Information Service, at that time part of the CIA.
Henry Norbert Krieger was born in Wuppertal, Germany, and grew up in Switzerland. He was attending the University of Brussels when the Germans invaded Belgium in 1940, and he was transferred to St. Cyprien, an internment camp in France.
He escaped from the camp after six months and made his way to Marseille, France, where his mother met him, his family said. They lived in Havana for a year before moving to the United States in 1943. He then became a U.S. citizen.
He served in the Army during World War II and participated in the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.
